The Science of Pre-1RM Neural Potentiation
Warming up for a 1RM is completely different from a standard workout warmup. The goal is to maximize Post-Activation Performance Enhancement (PAPE) and motor unit recruitment while producing near-zero metabolic fatigue.
The 3 Rules of 1RM Warmups
- 1. Taper Reps Aggressively: High reps cause glycogen depletion. Keep sets above 70% to 1–2 reps only.
- 2. Match Technical Execution: Treat empty bar sets with the exact setup, breathing, and bracing you use on 100% attempts.
- 3. Mind the Rest Intervals: Rest 2–3 minutes before your 90% single, and 3–5 full minutes before your 1RM attempt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about warmup sets, rest periods, and plate loading.
Most strength athletes perform 5 to 6 progressive sets: Empty bar × 10, 40% × 5, 60% × 3, 75% × 2, 85% × 1, and 92.5% × 1 before taking their target 100% attempt.
PAPE is the physiological phenomenon where high-intensity muscular contractions increase subsequent peak power and force output by increasing myosin light-chain phosphorylation and spinal cord excitability.
